Memphis Grizzlies…A Promising Franchise Team
Originally based in Vancouver, the Grizzlies were one of two Canadian teams to join the league in 1995. Although they started slow, the team showed steady improvement during the first couple of seasons. In 2001, the team was moved to Tennessee to become the Memphis Grizzlies.
As the Memphis Grizzlies, the team has made it into the playoffs three times. Unfortunately, the team has faced some difficulties through the years and has not yet been able to make it to the championship. The 2009-2010 season so far has been mildly successful with the team posting as many wins as losses.
The Memphis Grizzlies’ home court is the FedEx Forum. Before FedEx, the team played in the Pyramid Arena located in Memphis, but moved in 2004 when the newer arena was completed. With seating for more than 18,000, the team has 27 courtside suites, 32 club suites, and 80 box seats. The arena was the first to feature the see-through shot clocks, using them beginning in 2004. The interior of the arena is musically themed in honor of the rich heritage of the area, and has four restaurants, two of which are named to follow the music theme.
Of course, no basketball team would be complete without their dance teams and mascot and the Memphis Grizzlies are no exception. From the Grizz Girls dance team to the mascot Grizz, fans have plenty to entertain them at the games.
Grizz joined the organization during their first season in Canada, and moved to the south when they relocated. He has appeared at every home game since the beginning except for the 2007-2008 season when he was fighting and successfully recovering from a bout with cancer. He returned the next year and has been even more active and entertaining than before.
Other teams participating in the game day entertainment are the Jr. dance and cheer squads, the Dunk Team, the Drumline and others. One of the most famous of these is probably the Grizzlies Grannies and Grandpas, a team of seniors who dance to hip-hop routines.
Out in the community, the Memphis Grizzlies are very active, giving back to the community in many ways. They participate in several educational, community, and outreach programs and donate to various charities. They also have started their own foundations.
The Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation is committed to area youth, helping through educational encouragement and mentoring programs. The Friends of Grizz is another charity started by the organization to help area cancer patients battle their disease.
The Memphis Grizzlies may not be the most successful team in the league, but they are definitely on the rise. Games are extremely entertaining and members of this organization are role models and contributors to the community.
